In the late 1960s, Charles D. Beard, Jr. searched the Birmingham, Alabama, area for home health care for his aging mother and aunts. Through this search, he discovered a great need for quality home health care at all income levels. Mr. Beard set out to bring such services to area residents. In 1970, he founded Alabama Home Health Care, which later became Alacare Home Health & Hospice.

Under Mr. Beard’s direction, Alacare initially provided services in Jefferson and Shelby counties with a staff consisting of two home care aides, two nurses, and administrative support staff. Today, two of Charles D. Beard’s children are an integral part of Alacare’s daily operations.

In honor of Alacare’s compassion and service to the people of Alabama, the Beard family established Founder’s Day as a method to help raise money for the Hospice & Home Health Fund of Alabama (HHHFA). The HHHFA was created to help patients using home health or hospice services who have monetary restrictions that may prohibit them from receiving care in their home.
